4916Mkgmap: Create maps from OpenStreetMap for Garmin GPS devices
Create maps from OpenStreetMap for Garmin GPS devicesThe main purpose of Mkgmap is its ability to use OpenStreetMap data and then generate a map from it in a Garming .img file format, thus allowing users to load these files onto their compatible GPS units.
Mkgmap is a small program, but has numerous useful features. It can generate a map straight from a file which has been saved from JOSM or from an extract of the main OSM planet file. There is an option which can convert several .osm files in a single run of the program in order to create a map file set with a single pass.
Mkgmap can create a .tdb file along with an overview map which can be used to look at the maps in QLandkarte or MapSource. You can create a gmapsupp.img file which can later be copied to an SD card.
Previously produced .img files can be combined into a single gmapsupp.img file for easier manipulation. You can also create a .tdb and overview map directly from a previously created .img files.
The mapping done between OSM features and features in the Garmin map allows for complete customization.
When possible, you will be able to use transliteration of characters to ASCII in order to enable use of maps on low end devices or for creating international maps.
With Mkgmap you will be able to easily create maps with support for routing and it will help you to check the roundabouts, flare roads and also remove elements that are causing errors.
